In the lead up to COP26, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the planet's current climate path "catastrophic." The 2030 NDCs submitted by governments at the conference put us on a trajectory towards 2.4oC warming or more by the end of the century. Governments must take more urgent action to cut emissions, particularly by accelerating the transition of energy systems to low-emissions technologies. But will they act boldly enough in time to make a real difference to societal and ecological survival?
A recently released report by the Fossil Fuels Aotearoa Research Network (FFARN), led by economic anthropologist Dr Terrence Loomis, investigated the research literature on energy transitions and found there was more to the reluctance of governments to undertake radical energy system reform besides party politics or failure of ‘political will.’ The report, Accelerating Energy Transition: Obstacles and Opportunities for Urgent Government Action identifies three main kinds of obstacles that politicians encounter when trying to build a collective political will to accelerate energy transition, and suggests opportunities and strategies progressive policy makers and climate action groups could consider to overcome these obstacles and unblock policy inertia.
Dr Terrence Loomis presented the report at a webinar on 17 February 2022 hosted by 350 Aotearoa.
